Education and Training Directorate Statement

Released 02/04/2015

A withdrawal space was erected inside a classroom for a student with behavioural challenges and special needs.

The space was a fenced in structure inside a classroom.

The space was entirely inappropriate and unacceptable.

The structure was installed 10 March 2015 and removed 27 March 2015.

The leaders and teachers in our schools, together with families have done an immense amount of excellent work in providing safe and supportive classrooms for students.

This is an isolated example of very poor decision making and of the upmost seriousness.

An immediate investigation, independent of the Education and Training Directorate, into how a decision like this could be made in one of our schools has already begun.

The principal has been removed from the school whilst the investigation takes place.

Two extra teachers with expertise in behaviour management and disability education have been assigned to the school.

The matter was referred to the ACT Human Rights Commission by a concerned member of the school community.

Our priority is to maintain the privacy of the student and the family and to provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all students at the school.

There has been communication with appropriate members of the school community.
