Released 13/04/2018

Think you know our city’s history? Challenge your perception of Canberra at the first weekend of the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival!

“As Canberrans gear up for the school holidays, this weekend is a great opportunity for visitors to explore our region’s vast cultural and natural heritage with family and friends,” Festival coordinator Linda Roberts said.

“Journey back to prehistoric Canberra for a tour at the National Dinosaur Museum and learn about all the toothy, fluffy, feathered and scaled creatures that once roamed here.

“Become an archaeologist for the day at Tuggeranong Schoolhouse and help unlock the history of our region. Join archaeologists and built heritage experts for a tour and discover what life was like in one of Canberra’s first schools. A BBQ will also be held after the event which is a great opportunity to relax outdoors and watch the kids taking part in a mock excavation.

“Kickstart your Festival experience with a bang, twang, strum or any other note, at an exhibition of mechanical musical instruments in Braidwood. Visitors can marvel at the stunning collection of phonographs, gramophones and early wireless sets dating bate as early as the 1840s.

“If you would rather stick close to Canberra to discover the pleasures of ‘town’, step back into a Regency wonderland at a Jane Austen Festival. A suite of events will take place at Albert Hall over the weekend that will allow you to dance like the Bennets, join a watercolour workshop, learn about Georgian hairstyles, enjoy a picnic and period games, take a candlelit supper, experience a grand ball and much more.

“Art lovers will be keen to see a range of exhibitions opening as part of the Festival this weekend. At the Burrunju Art Gallery you can discover Aboriginal paintings, didgeridoos, carvings, jewellery and more before heading to Telstra Tower for the Canberra Photographic Club’s exhibit ‘Different Views 4’. This exhibit explores the 2018 Festival theme ‘My Culture, My Story’ and features photographic interpretations of our region.

“You can also join the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, built with the support of the Canberra Macedonian community. See a photographic retrospective, hear stories of its creation and admire the stunning architecture and fresco paintings,” Mrs Roberts said.

The 2018 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival runs until Sunday 29 April.
