Conditional approval strikes right balance for Woden

Released 04/10/2018

Following public interest in the new WOVA development in Phillip, the planning authority has approved an amended development application with conditions that address community concerns.

ACT Chief Planner Ben Ponton said the amended development application for 1 Launceston Street was approved with conditions on 28 September 2018.

“The changes provide an excellent outcome for the community as well as the developer,” Mr Ponton said.

“Following 109 representations from the community on the original application, the developers reduced the building height and mass fronting onto Melrose Drive and increased the height of the building fronting Furzer Street.

“These changes provided a considerable improvement to the overshadowing impacts of the development.

“However, the approval of the new development application is further conditional on reducing the scale of Building 4, which fronts Melrose Drive, from 16 storeys to 12 storeys and for the upper levels of that building to be terraced. Among other conditions, the facades and landscaping will also be improved.

“WOVA and the associated extensive areas of public space and commercial tenancies will provide another valuable contribution to the energy of the Woden Town Centre at a time of renewed growth for this important centre,” Mr Ponton said.

The WOVA development comprises four buildings varying in height from 12 storeys to 24 storeys on Section 3 Phillip. It will include approximately 800 residential units, ground floor commercial space, ground floor open spaces, and basement car parking for approximately 1160 vehicles.
