Celebrating world wetlands at Jerrabomberra Open Day

Released 02/02/2018

The Woodland and Wetlands Trust and the Parks and Conservation Service invites all Canberrans to a special open day at Jerrabomberra Wetlands this Saturday 3 February in celebration of World Wetlands Day 2018.

“This event is a great way for family and friends to end the school holidays on a high note and explore one of the ACT’s hidden natural gems,” Jerrabomberra Wetlands Program Manager Lori Gould said.

“Walking along the serene pathways at Jerrabomberra Wetlands, it is hard to believe you are just four kilometers from the city center.

“The open day is a fantastic way to discover one of our region’s most valuable wetland habitats, which is of national and international importance. The wetlands are home to about 160 bird species, including migratory birds like the Latham’s snipe, as well as platypus, turtles and other wildlife.

“This weekend’s event provides the perfect opportunity to spend some time outdoors and encounter our local wildlife in a unique setting. There will be a huge variety of stalls and activities for the whole family including a range of ranger guided walks, children’s activities, reptile displays, art exhibitions, Indigenous cultural activities, live music, food stalls, beer and more.

“This year’s event is hosted by the Woodland and Wetlands Trust at Jerrabomberra Wetlands in partnership with Canberra City Farm and supports the effort to raise awareness about the important environmental values of wetlands around the globe.”

“Entry is by gold coin donation with all proceeds supporting the work of the Woodlands and Wetlands Trust at Jerrabomberra Wetlands,” Ms Gould said.
