Seven amazing things to do in our parks during National Parks Week

Released 10/03/2017

It’s National Parks Week so if you need an excuse we’ve come up with seven good reasons to get out into the parks this long weekend.

Enjoy sunset with a friend. Find a high point in a reserve, sit on a log and watch the sunset. Mt Painter, Mt Arrawang and Mt Majura are stunning but there are also the picturesque Gossen, Crace, Red and Oakey hills, to name just a few. Don't forget your torch to find your way home!

Spot wildlife in the wild. Grab a camera and go searching for some local wildlife at Tidbinbilla or Mulligans Flat which are both jam packed with native wildlife. If you want to do some serious ‘twitching’ the Jerrabomberra Wetlands has a number of specially built ‘hides’ for observing native wildlife.

Be all Zen in nature. Take time out from the routines of life and connect with nature and your spiritual self. A short trek on the Northern centenary trail or the Australian Alps walking track in Namadgi will lift the spirit and cleanse the mind and still get you home before tea. Take water and a hat.

Discover our ancient past. If you fancy a peek at what Canberra was like 100, 200 and 21,000 years ago take a walk on the Birragai Time Trial at Tidbinbilla. For more recent local history visit the Duntroon Dairy at the base of Mt Pleasant or check out Gudgenby in a box at Namadgi visitor centre.

Get nude! While not for the fainthearted Kambah Pool down in Canberra’s south offers Canberrans the chance to commune with nature…starkers. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Bag a Munro. A ‘Munro’ is a Scottish term for a mountain above 914 metres or 3,000 feet. The closest Munro to Canberra is Mount Tennant (1375m) but further afield Mount Bimberi (1913m), Mount Coree (1421m) and Mount Franklin (1644m) all qualify. Don’t forget a climb up our local ‘hills’ Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain and Mount Pleasant can still rate as epic!

Treat the kids. Pick up a Nature Play passport from the Namadgi or Tidbinbilla visitor centres and set off with the kids on a special mission. The passport includes special stickers for definitive proof the mission was completed. It even has a checklist of 15 things to do before you are 12 on the back cover.
