Tidbinbilla Visitor Centre gets a facelift

Released 08/11/2016

Tidbinbilla’s award winning Visitor Centre is scheduled to undergo some important maintenance work to its characteristic mud brick exterior.

“The centre was built in 2000 by TT Architecture,” Regional manager, ACT Parks and Conservation, Brett McNamara said.

“The much loved building incorporates sustainable building materials including pressed earth mud bricks, using locally sourced materials,” Mr McNamara said.

“Unfortunately due to the age of the building and the impact of the climate, some of the mud bricks have begun to deteriorate.

“For this reason the building will undergo some maintenance to preserve it.  A waterproof membrane render will be applied to the exterior of the building in order to protect the mud bricks and the integrity of the building.  ACT Property Group is managing these works on behalf of ACT Parks and Conservation.

“The finished product will be a similar coloured render to the current exterior bricks and the beautiful moths on the entrance wall will be kept intact as a feature of the building.

“The original mud bricks will still be visible in their original form from inside the Visitor Centre,” Mr McNamara said.

Work will begin on Tuesday 8 November 2016 and take approximately six weeks - weather permitting.

The Visitor Centre will remain open during the restoration period, and the reserve’s program of guided walks and activities including the Pelican feed, Koalas in the canopy and Platypus pursuits will continue as scheduled.

“We apologise for any impact upon patrons using the Visitor centre during this time,” Mr McNamara said.
