Curtin group centre draft master plan is open for comment

Released 18/01/2016

The government is seeking views on a wide range of initiatives and planning controls proposed in the draft version of the Curtin group centre master plan, Director-General of the Environment and Planning Directorate, Dorte Ekelund said today.

"Consultation, which is open for another 3 weeks, is an important part of the master plan process. People who live or work in or near the centre, or who use the area, have valuable knowledge to contribute," Ms Ekelund said.

"The draft plan acknowledges, and is careful to retain, the good elements of the centre’s design, such as the sunny central courtyard, while aiming to improve connections to surrounding suburbs.

"It also offers a diverse range of planning proposals that can stimulate the centre’s economy," Ms Ekelund said.

The draft plan recommends the possible redevelopment of some areas to up to four and six storeys, in particular the Statesman Hotel site is proposed to allow building heights up to six storeys, which would encourage evening activity in the centre and improve safety through increased surveillance.

"We are keen to hear the community’s views on the recent suggestion by the Statesman’s owner that 12 storeys be allowed on the site," Ms Ekelund said.

"We are also looking forward to comments on other proposals, such as residential development close to the centre to support local jobs and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the centre.

The draft master plan and community engagement report from the first stage of the master plan process are available at http://haveyoursay.planning.act.gov.au. Information posters will be on display at the Woden Public Library until consultation closes on 5 February 2016.

Feedback will be incorporated into the final master plan due for release in 2016. For more information visit www.environment.act.gov.au
