Shining light on Canberra as our solar capital
The ACT’s second large-scale solar farm began construction today with the turning of the first sod by Minister for Environment and Climate Change Simon Corbell today.
The 13 megawatt Mugga Lane Solar Park on the corner of Mugga Lane and the Monaro Hwy, adjacent to the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre will be owned and operated by Maoneng Group, formally Zhenfa Australia.
“The ACT Government is proud to be working with Maoneng to develop Canberra’s second solar farm,” Mr Corbell said.
“We are committed to ensuring that by 2020, 90% of Canberra’s electricity supply will come from renewable energy, contributing to a 40% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by that same year.
“Large-scale renewable energy generation, from both solar and wind, is key to achieving this.
“The Mugga Lane Solar Park project is particularly exciting because it includes innovative technology, with half a megawatt of ground mounted solar panels that track the sun throughout the day.
“The solar farm will include approximately 48,000 polycrystalline photovoltaic modules that will generate approximately 24,500 megawatt-hours of power per year in the first year that will be enough energy to power 3,000 Canberra homes.”
A winner in the ACT’s first solar auction Zhenfa Australia recently underwent a restructure and was renamed Maoneng Group. Maoneng plans to have the project substantially completed by the end of this year.
“As well as contributing reduced greenhouse gas emissions, our commitment to renewable energy also offers tremendous opportunities for local industry innovation, job creation and economic growth,” Mr Corbell said.
“Over the past five years, the ACT Government has attracted more than $1.5 billion in renewable energy investment, which has supported a 400% growth in renewable energy jobs.
“As Canberra emerges as the renewable energy capital of Australia, it is an exciting time to be involved in innovative projects like the Mugga Lane Solar Park.
