$2 million in grants to make Canberra healthier

Released 22/10/2015

Six organisations will share in $2 million over the next three years to combat the concerning rates of overweight and obesity, reduce alcohol and tobacco related harm and promote healthy active ageing in the ACT, Minister for Health Simon Corbell announced today.

The successful recipients of Healthy Canberra Grants are Bluearth Foundation, YMCA of Canberra, Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), Companion House Assisting Survivors of Torture and Trauma, Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service and Healthy Kids Association.

“These community partners will play an important role in helping to increase exercise and healthy eating for families and kids, and to counteract the incidence of overweight and obesity, which we know is a burden for our community,” Mr Corbell said.

The Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Clinic will receive funding over the next three years to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthy Weight Initiative Program.

“A key priority for the ACT Government is improving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health outcomes,” Mr Corbell said.

“The establishment of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Healthy Weight Initiative Program will provide a holistic and culturally appropriate service covering a range of weight issues, focusing on prevention, management and support.”

The 2014 ACT Chief Health Officer’s report also highlighted that alcohol-related harms remain an important population health issue.

“To help address this, the Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education has received a grant for a social marketing campaign to encourage partners, family or friends of a pregnant woman to be alcohol-free during the pregnancy period,” Mr Corbell said.
