Last Post ceremony for ESA at War Memorial
Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Simon Corbell, has thanked the Australian War Memorial for introducing a Last Post ceremony this Sunday for ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) staff.
The special Last Post ceremony will coincide with St Florian's Day (the patron Saint for firefighters).
"The 4th of May will now be an opportunity to honour a relative of a member of the ACT ESA who gave their life in the service of Australia in time of war," Mr Corbell said.
"Members of the ESA including all the services; ACT Fire & Rescue, the ACT Rural Fire Service, the ACT Ambulance Service and the ACT State Emergency Service will attend on Sunday with their families to see first hand this moving ceremony.
"Beginning last year and held each afternoon, the Last Post ceremony is an experience that every Australian should attend when visiting the Australian War Memorial. Staff and volunteers at the ACT ESA will now have an opportunity every year to pay tribute to a relative who has served in war for Australia.
"Sunday's ceremony will pay tribute to Private Arthur Stanley Gurney VC, for his service in the Second World War. Private Gurney was a week short of his 32nd birthday when he enlisted in the Second Australian Imperial Force in December, 1940. Posted to the 2/48th Battalion, Private Gurney was also one of the Rats of Tobruk and is featured on the Australian War Memorial's Wall of Honour.
"ESA staff and volunteers were invited to nominate a relative to be honoured for the special ceremony earlier this year. Private Gurney was selected and was a relative of an ACT Fire & Rescue firefighter."
St Florian's Day (4 May) is honoured by firefighters each year and will now also include the Last Post ceremony at the Australian War Memorial for the ACT ESA into the future.
The Last Post ceremony will begin from the Remembrance Pool from 4.40pm, Sunday. The ceremony will also be broadcast from 4.55pm on the Australian War Memorial website, www.awm.gov.au.
