Security workers continue to receive workplace information

Released 05/06/2012

Security workers in the ACT will continue to receive better access to information regarding their workers' rights after a review found that current legislation was effectively filling an information void, Attorney General, Simon Corbell, said today.

"In an industry that is typically characterised by workers operating in isolation from colleagues, and in different workplaces from one shift to the next, it can be difficult for workers to access information that workers in other industries may take for granted," Mr Corbell said.

Under the Security Industry Act 2010, new security workers are required to undertake training about basic rights like sick and holiday leave, pay rates and occupational health and safety rules for employees with representatives of a registered organisation.

Mr Corbell tabled the review on the law today in the Legislative Assembly which found that workplace information sessions were highly valued by workers. Last year 2,800 security licence applicants undertook the training.

"The government has received very positive feedback from the implementation of this law. Around
80 per cent of respondents felt the information they received from the sessions were very good or excellent and almost 100 per cent of respondents reported a clearer understanding of their rights,"
Mr Corbell said.

"Around 3 per cent of the security licence applicants who participated in the sessions last year said they would like even further details about wages and penalties.

"It is clear that information sessions provided a valuable opportunity for workers to discuss information about their future employment rights and obligations in an industry where this has proven difficult in the past."

The case for retaining the workplace information requirement is supported by referrals made to the Fair Work Ombudsman and Human Rights Commission and the positive feedback provided to the service provider, United Voice.
