New plan gives breath of fresh air to Kambah Village

Released 01/08/2012

Kambah residents will have access to a larger and more diverse supermarket, an upgraded entrance, more on-street car parking and an upgraded courtyard to refresh the retail centre's image in a renewed Kambah Village, Minister for the Environment and Sustainable Development, Simon Corbell, said today.

Mr Corbell was joined by Member for Brindabella Joy Burch, to launch the final Kambah Village Master Plan.

"This master plan has been designed to ensure that Kambah maintains its unique village feel, but continues to grow with the community that it serves, including with retail demand, but also in way that gives the village a breath of fresh air," Mr Corbell said.

"Throughout the consultation it was made clear that height restrictions should remain within four storeys, and this master plan will restrict building heights mostly to two storeys around the central courtyard.

"Kambah is Tuggeranong's oldest group centre, established in 1976, the new master plan will see the village retain its unique look and feel, while freshening up its appearance with an upgrade to the courtyard in the heart of the centre as well as a brand new entrance with new landscaping off Marconi Street.

"Another key feature of the village master plan is the revised street layout and options for future retail and residential development. This plan includes provision for a new street parallel to the grass swale and increased visual connection to the street to better protect pedestrians.

"The master plan also outlines an extension of Kett Street to Drakeford Drive to provide greater access south of the centre. The plan also includes approximately 65 extra car parking spaces in and around the Kambah Village centre.

Member for Brindabella, Joy Burch, said many locals had made representations on this master plan.

"I am confident that this master plan will suit the needs of the community, particularly after a detailed consultation process which had involved members of the Kambah community along every step of the way," Ms Burch said.

"A key benefit of the Kambah Village area is that parking is currently located conveniently close to stops and services and this will be retained.

"I am pleased to see that this is a staged approach to protect the village feel of the centre. Any future changes to the Territory Plan will be subject to further consultation with the local community."
