Community input to help shape Haig Park masterplan

Released 16/05/2017

“Our proposed vision for Haig Park, based on community feedback received during stage one of the consultation, is that it should be a vibrant and inclusive urban park providing a series of safe and attractive spaces for passive and active enjoyment, while connecting with the heritage of the park,” Mr Bulless said.

“It should be a place for social and cultural exchange, contributing to a unique urban experience.

“To achieve this vision the design elements create different edges to the park to make it more attractive and accessible to users.

“For example, high-traffic areas of the park, like those near Lonsdale street, could have more defined public infrastructure, while those areas at the ends could have more natural landscapes and informal activities.

“We had a lot of great input during the first stage of consultation and we expect to again have a high level of interest in stage two.

“We have already held a second community workshop, and we will seek more community input online through the YourSay website and at drop-in sessions later this month.”

The key design elements focus on five main themes:

  • Character and amenity - Celebrate the identity of the park; provide high-quality public spaces that are engaging, comfortable and amenable for users; and ensure the park is a safe place at all times.
  • Access - Improved access for everyone; strengthened connections in and through the park; and improved active travel opportunities.
  • Heritage - To conserve and respect the heritage values of the park; to enjoy it as a heritage feature of the city, to allow other values to co-exist with the heritage values; and to ensure the heritage values are sustainable.
  • Environment and sustainability - To ensure the park is environmentally sustainable; to build on its status as the city’s green lung; and to ensure it withstands climatic impacts.
  • Destination - To create a destination that strengthens the park’s position as a landmark; that provide a range of activities; that meets the recreational needs of the community; and provides a community meeting.
