Released 14/11/2016

After the earthquake in New Zealand, Canberra Week in Wellington has been postponed.

The Commissioner for International Engagement, Brendan Smyth has advised that the Canberra Week in Wellington program of events and activities has been postponed.

“Given that much of the activity we were going to undertake was to take place in the city centre that has been most affected by the earthquake, we have decided to postpone the public events and business delegation,” Mr Smyth said.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr has spoken with Mayor of Wellington Justin Lester this morning and will still be attending tomorrow at the Mayor’s invitation.  He will meet with the Council to offer his support and best wishes from the people of Canberra, and reaffirm that Canberra Week in Wellington will go ahead at a later date.

The people of Wellington and all of New Zealand are in our thoughts. Canberrans know what natural disasters are like and our best wishes go to our sister city and the nation.
