Government plans released for Kambah Village as private redevelopment revealed

Released 10/10/2018

Local residents will benefit after the announcement today releasing the final sketch plan for $2 million in upgrades to the public areas at Kambah Village, which complement plans released today for a major private redevelopment of the shops, including an extension to Woolworths.

“This is huge news for the Kambah community. Kambah is one of the largest suburbs in Australia with one of the smallest Woolworths. The private development to expand Woolworths and will complement the $2.3 million in works that the ACT Government is delivering to upgrade the public areas around the shops,” Minister for City Services Chris Steel said.

“Over 2,000 people in Kambah signed my petition calling for the shops to be upgraded, so it is great to see significant investment being made by both the ACT Government and by private owners at the shops to get it done.”

Stage 2 of the Government’s upgrades to Kambah Village follow extensive consultation with the community. The final sketch plans detail around $2 million worth of upgrades to the existing playground, with new play equipment such as a basket swing, slides, a climbing frame and trampolines, as well as a new shade sail to cover high use play areas.

Upgrades to the public areas also include new irrigated grass areas which will form a shaded common green gathering space with new deciduous trees, gardens, a barbecue shelter and picnic settings.

Other improvements include new wheelchair compliant toilets, an additional nine car parks, a range of seating areas, new waste enclosures with artistic screen, upgrades to the pedestrian lighting and pavements.

The proposed expansion of the Woolworths would extend the supermarket by 1,754m2 to comprise a total area of 3,475m2 including a BWS 200m2 in size. The application says would provide a much larger, modern supermarket layout offering with the potential to provide many more products for its clientele. The proposal also includes a new covered entrance at the Northern end of the centre as well as new commercial retail space.
