BBQ held to celebrate ESA volunteers

Released 25/02/2015

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Joy Burch has tonight hosted a barbeque for volunteers at the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) Training Centre at Hume.

“Volunteers are an integral part of society, and play a particularly important role in emergency services, and it was my pleasure to meet one-on-one with some of our volunteers tonight and thank them for the work they do around the clock for the Canberra community,” Ms Burch said.

In the ACT, volunteers make up 1,945 of the ESA. This includes members from:

• ACT Fire & Rescue Community Fire Units;
• ACT Mapping and Planning Support group;
• ACT State Emergency Service; and
• ACT Rural Fire Service

“This equates to 74 per-cent of the ACT ESA, and not only do volunteers protect and assist the ACT, but are always at the ready to assist neighbouring areas and other towns in our region, as well as other jurisdictions across the country.

“Only a matter of two weeks ago ESA volunteers were part of an ACT taskforce sent to Western Australia to assist in the bushfire emergency there.

“In meeting with some of the volunteers tonight, it was pleasing to hear how rewarding it has been working with their respective service inside the ACT ESA. Joining for their own reasons has given volunteers an opportunity to share and learn new skills, make friends and also assist their community in times of crisis.

“I would also like to thank the employers who generously release ESA volunteers to help. The support that managers provide is very much appreciated by ESA staff and also the ACT Government.

“All Canberrans should be proud of the specialist work that the ESA volunteers do in our community and I hope they continue to enjoy giving their time to work in such essential roles.”
