Special ceremony for Canberra's 70 newest citizens

Released 24/07/2012

Seventy people from across the globe will tonight become Australian citizens at a special ceremony hosted by members of Kambah Lions Club at the Burns Club.

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Joy Burch will preside over the citizenship ceremony which includes people from 22 countries pledging their loyalty to Australia.
The most common countries of origin of the new citizens were Burma (9), India (6), New Zealand (6), the Philippines (6), and the United Kingdom (6).

"Some of these Canberrans have lived here for many years, while some have just arrived," Ms Burch said.

"What they all have in common is a desire to become Australian citizens and all that that entails.

"While we encourage people to embrace and take on Australian culture and customs, we also want them to continue to enjoy and nourish the traditions and languages of the lands in which they were born.

"Belonging to a family or a community, sharing a past and holding onto common hopes and goals for the future is essential to live a full life.

"By becoming an Australian, our newest citizens are showing they want to be part of our community and also have a say in our nation's future."

Ms Burch said the involvement of Kambah Lions Club at tonight's will make the ceremony special.

"Not only has the Club taken an active role in organising the ceremony, but the presence of around 20 members will make night even more memorable for our newest citizens."
