Eight projects receive funding to improve lives of children

Released 16/07/2012

ACT Minister for Community Services Joy Burch today announced the successful applicants to the 2012-13 funding round for strategic projects under the Schools as Communities program.
The Schools as Communities grants allow families, schools and the community to come together to work towards solutions for possible social problems involving children or young people.

"Through the latest round of the Schools as Communities Strategic Project funding, $46,000 has been awarded to projects that will see families, schools, communities and businesses work together to support children, young people and their families," Ms Burch said.

This year's programs include: White Ribbon's Breaking the Silence in Schools, that will embed violence prevention activities within school's curriculum; and Bonython Primary Schools Kulture Konnections, that will acknowledge the over 50 identified cultural backgrounds in the school community.

"A strong range of applications were submitted by schools, which shows that schools play a much larger role in our community than just education.

"A good way to build communities is to offer support to projects suggested by the community and the ten successful applicants have developed innovative and evidence-based projects that will deliver direct and positive impacts on our community.

"I am especially pleased to see a range of projects that emphasise the importance of prevention and early intervention and that will help identify potential issues in children and young people before they become a problem, or tackle problem areas in the early years of a child's life."
