Time to nominate Canberra’s inclusion champions

Released 28/09/2017 - Joint media release

Nominations are open for the 2017 ACT Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards, recognising individuals and organisations that promote inclusion in Canberra.

Each year the Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards provide the opportunity to recognise and celebrate the outstanding work being done in our community to include and engage people with disability.

The Awards, now in their 14th year, are an important step in embedding inclusion across all sectors of our community.

This year we have introduced a new category for ‘innovation in design to create inclusion of people with disability’. This recognises design which enables and includes people with disability in areas like the arts, building, architecture, landscape architecture, information technology, equipment and craft.

For the first time there is also a standalone award for ‘inclusion in private sector employment’ to recognise Canberra businesses leading the way in employing people with disability.

In 2016 the Chief Minister’s Inclusion Award was won by Mr David Williams for his work over more than 20 years building the public speaking skills of people with Down Syndrome and intellectual disabilities.

I encourage Canberrans to nominate an organisation or individual promoting an inclusive Canberra for all.

The Awards will acknowledge inclusive leaders in these major categories:

  1. Recognising people with disability who are leaders in inclusion
  2. Excellence in inclusion for mainstream services
  3. Excellence in inclusive specialist disability services
  4. Excellence in enabling inclusion through supporting people with disability

If you know someone who deserves to be recognised in one of these categories, nominate them today. Nominations close Monday 6 November 2017. For more information including the nomination form visit www.communityservices.act.gov.au.
