Council of Capital City Lord Mayors coming to Canberra in 2018

Released 01/09/2017

The Council of Capital City Lord Mayors (CCCLM) meeting has concluded in Sydney this afternoon and is coming to Canberra next year.

I’m very honoured to have been appointed Chair of the CCCLM for 2018. Being Chair means Canberra will play host to CCCLM meetings in 2018.

Engaging Canberra with other local government areas – particularly in our region – is something I have pushed for strongly as Chief Minister. Canberra’s prosperity relies not only on our own hard work, but also on our relationships with other cities.

As Chair of the CCCLM, I intend to continue this approach. I will champion the importance of sustainable transport infrastructure like light rail within cities, as well as improved transport links between cities, like the Canberra-Sydney rail link and increased airport connectivity.

I believe the CCCLM should build closer relationships with the Mayors of Wellington and Auckland. We should also explore the possibility of CCCLM participation in the World Cities Summit, hosted by the Centre for Liveable Cities in Singapore in July 2018.

At the CCCLM meeting over the last two days I have strongly advocated for Canberra as a fast-growing, progressive city of the future. I’ve had informal discussions on a wide range of issues with Lord Mayors, I have attended the Smart Cities Forum, and I have taken part in the annual general meeting.

This is an exciting time to be representing Canberra through this forum. I look forward to continuing to advocate for better linkages between our city and the nation.
