Local businesses strengthen ties with Wellington to benefit from direct flights

Released 08/07/2016

Local Canberra businesses are set to reap the benefits of direct international flights between Canberra and Wellington following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Canberra Business Chamber and the Wellington Chamber of Commerce.

There is huge potential for both Canberra and Wellington businesses to expand into new international markets. The MOU is an important sign of the willingness of both business communities to come together and support investment and job opportunities through enhanced access to each other’s markets.

The two chambers will work cooperatively by promoting their respective business events and they have agreed to host an annual business showcase event, alternating between each city.

There are already a number of established business to business connections between the cities, including Wellington company Infratil which owns a significant stake in Canberra Data Centres. Canberra company Cogito, which delivers data authentication services to the New Zealand Government has also set up an office in Wellington.

In addition to strong public sectors and related business services, the Canberra and Wellington economies also have shared interests in sports technology, premium wine marking, the film and creative sectors and national institutions. I congratulate both organisations on their enthusiasm and commitment to put this agreement in place and wish them the best for its implementation.
