Enlighten 2013 preview reveals cultural heart of Canberra

Released 11/01/2013

Live jazz in a high-security basement, indigenous dance, inspirational talks, shadow puppet comedy and evening nature tours are just a sneak peak of what's in store in Canberra during Enlighten this autumn.

The ACT Government will partner with 15 iconic Canberra attractions and partners who will open their doors after-hours during Enlighten 2013 to host exclusive events and surprising experiences, set against stunning architectural projections throughout the Parliamentary Triangle.

Today at the Royal Australian Mint I launched a preview program of Enlighten 2013. The preview includes late-night openings at some attractions and a selection of ticketed events such as Jazz in the Basement at the Royal Australian Mint's high-security basement, and a moving indigenous performance by desert dancers from Central Australia, Kungkarangkalpa: the Seven Sisters Songline at the National Museum of Australia.

The preview program also includes free late-night access to the National Library of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, Gallery of Australian Design, Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, and Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre.

Tickets to the preview events are now on sale, for information see www.enlightencanberra.com. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketek: www.ticketek.com or 13 28 49.

Today I also announced the Canberra artists who will feature during Enlighten. Professional partner and producer of the architectural projections, The Electric Canvas, will work with Canberra artists Betty Holdsworth, David Sequeira, Eleanor Gates-Stuart, Martin Ollman and James Houlcroft, whose distinctive interpretations of the national cultural collections will feature in the projections on the National Library, the Museum of Australian Democracy, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and Questacon.

Enlighten 2013 runs from 1 to 9 March. The full Enlighten 2013 program will be released on 1 February and will include an exciting array of events, including some Australian firsts. Information and images are available at www.enlightencanberra.com, with tickets available from Ticketek.
