The library ain't a bad place to be this April

Released 05/04/2018

April is no highway to hell for Libraries ACT, with plenty of activities, talks and workshops to both thrill and spark the interest of library members of all ages.

Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little, said the importance of continually evolving and providing innovative and interesting learning opportunities was prioritised at Libraries ACT.

“We put our heads together continually to ensure that we’re putting forward a program that is as enjoyable as it is educational,” Ms Little said.

“This April we have a headline author talk with Jeff Apter, author of High Voltage: The life of Angus Young, which details the rise of the Glasgow-born AC/DC guitarist. Jeff will discuss his bestselling biography on Saturday 28 April 2018 and then local band Ripped Salvation will rock the Woden Library playing the much-loved tunes of AC/DC.

“If music and biographies hit your high notes, Jeff will return to Woden Library on Monday 30 April 2018 for a workshop teaching those aged 16 and above how to select a subject, research, write, pitch, edit and design a book. It’s a brilliant opportunity not to be missed.”

Libraries ACT are also encouraging teens to visit in April with a number of events targeting the age-group. Ms Little reflected on the importance of libraries being multifunctional spaces that offer a wide breadth of resources and activities for teenagers.

“We’re passionate about the role of our libraries in the community. You can read books, download music or books, take part in workshops and even see concerts. Gungahlin Library will host two events for teenagers in April including the workshop ‘Reuse, remake, recycle: Re-Fashion in style’ by eco-stylist Nina Gbor, and young adult author L.M. Merrington will discuss her latest work, Gothic mystery The Iron Line.

“Our school holiday program is also now available for bookings. Key programs include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artefact-making workshops with local Ngunnawal man Richie Allan, our regular LEGO® Brick Club for the young builders amongst us and Dr Graham’s entertaining, hands-on school holiday science at Gungahlin Library on Wednesday 18 April 2018,” concluded Ms Little.

All Libraries ACT programs and events are free, however bookings are essential as places are limited. For more information on the variety of programs and events and to book, visit www.library.act.gov.au or call 6205 9000.
