Special story time session for children: Ngunawal language and culture

Released 21/02/2017

Children will have an opportunity to share Ngunawal language and culture during a special story time session at Kippax Library on Wednesday 22 February 2017.

“To celebrate International Mother Language Day (which is today, 21 February), Libraries ACT will host a
30 minute Ngunawal story time presented by guests from Thunderstone Aboriginal Cultural and Land Management Services,” Director, Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said.

“The special story time will give three to five year olds and their parents an opportunity to hear songs and stories including Why the Emu can’t fly, as well as learning some of the original culture of the region in a interactive setting.”

International Mother Language Day is a worldwide annual observance to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation first announced the day in 1999 and have celebrated every year since February 2000.

“Story time on Wednesday will also help Libraries ACT address one of the deliverables in the Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP),” Ms Little said.

“Announced in September 2016, TCCS launched it’s first RAP which sets out innovative and practical ways to contribute to reconciliation with a range of initiatives that support a goal of inclusion. Libraries ACT is proud to continue its ongoing commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

“Libraries ACT regularly hosts story time at most of its branches delivering enchanting stories, rhymes and songs for children and their parents. It helps develop a love of books and lifelong use of libraries, pre-reading skills and a desire to learn to read. Story time can also help develop listening and language skills, cooperative behaviour as part of a group, understanding of simple concepts as well as imagination and creativity,” Ms Little concluded.

The special Ngunawal story time will be held from 10.30 am – 11 am at the Kippax Library.

The TCCS RAP can be found at www.tccs.act.gov.au
