It’s alive! Frankenfest headlines Summer What’s On guide at libraries

Released 24/11/2017

Libraries ACT today revealed its new Summer What’s On guide with a series of free programs, events and sessions for a range of ages, including Frankenfest to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

“The 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein headlines a bumper what’s on guide across our branches this summer. Frankenfest will delight people of all ages, with programs including Frankencrayon Monster Mash for the little ones,” Director of Libraries ACT, Vanessa Little said.

“If you’re a Frankenstein tragic, our Gungahlin branch will host a special panel talk, Post Modern Prometheus, featuring author Kaaron Warren and Professor William Christie, Head of Humanities at Australian National University, discussing the enduring appeal of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

Ms Little encouraged library users to escape the heat and visit their local branch during the summer holiday period where they can take part in many of the free programs and workshops.

“Our collaboration with ACT NoWaste continues and they will present a series of workshops including how to make your unwanted textiles functional and how to reduce food wastage.

“One of the special events being held throughout January is the Interactive Reef: Recycled Ocean program at our Dickson branch, which aims to raise awareness of the impact of waste on the environment.

“Youngsters will be kept entertained throughout the school holiday break with many activities including lego challenges, the Game On! Summer Reading Club featuring themed programs including dicey challenge, making your own trading cards, and coding an ozobot to bowl, as well as special story times presented by the Canberra Theatre Centre for 5-12 year olds for The Gruffalo and The 78 Storey Treehouse,” Ms Little said.

Summer also provides an opportunity for adults to improve their digital literacy, and Ms Little encouraged adults to take advantage of the one-on-one workshops.

“Our regular one-on-one digital literacy training workshops for adults are really popular. These 30-minute sessions run at all library branches and are focused on developing digital skills for adults on a range of topics which may include computer basics, email, ebooks or the internet.

“In an increasingly digital world, it is important that we continue to provide opportunities for adults to develop and improve their digital literacy and these workshops are an example of that,” Ms Little said.

All programs are free and most require bookings. For more information, visit www.library.act.gov.au or call 6205 9000.
