Pick up a bargain at the garage sale trail tomorrow

Released 21/10/2016

One big day of garage sales will tomorrow, Saturday 22 October 2016, offer people all over Australia the chance to pick up a bargain and Canberrans are encouraged support the initiative.

“The Garage Sale Trail is an opportunity to find a bargain, reduce waste and meet new people,” ACT NOWaste Education Manager Sue Grau said.

“Now in its sixth year, the Garage Sale Trail sees hundreds of thousands of people participate and last year, three million pre-loved items were listed for sale at over 13,000 sales across Australia.

“The ACT Government has supported the event for the last three years and is once again pleased to be involved. The Garage Sale Trail promotes the re-use of unwanted goods being diverted from landfill and tomorrow 296 participants in Canberra have registered to become involved which is a big increase from 161 groups in 2015.

“Last year’s economic benefits resulted in $51,724 worth of unwanted goods being diverted from landfill in the ACT which also equates to 1,653 full shopping trolleys.

“The idea of passing on what you don’t want to someone who does is a fantastic form of sustainability. It gives local community members the opportunity to make a few dollars from items they no longer want and in the process, save on landfill fees and reduce illegal dumping.

“In addition to finding the ultimate bargain or quirky treasure, being part of the trail is an opportunity to stop and consider the impact we are having on the planet and the things we can do to make a difference.

“Canberra buyers can visit www.garagesaletrail.com.au and follow the prompts to look at sales registered in their area. Planning the day is a big part of the experience and searching the various maps and timing of the garage sales will assist keen shoppers.”
