Grab a bargain at the library book sale

Released 24/11/2016

Book lovers looking for a bargain will have an opportunity to expand their home collection on Saturday 26 November 2016 with the Libraries ACT book sale.

“More than 6000 items will be available for sale at the Tuggeranong branch. They have been withdrawn as part of maintaining a current, vibrant and attractive collection at all of Libraries ACT’s nine branches,” Libraries ACT Director Vanessa Little said.

“With approximately 60,000 new items added to the collection each year, Saturday will be the first time Libraries ACT has offered material in this way.

“In the past, we have donated items to aged care homes, child and family centres and charities. This will continue, however, as these groups have specific needs, there is surplus material. Saturday’s book sale will help to provide the space needed to keep local libraries fresh and updated with new material.

“There are various reasons for public libraries to withdraw and discard items. They could be slightly damaged, be a superseded edition, multiple copies of once popular titles or even be available in other formats like online.”

Ms Little said that funds raised from Saturday’s book sale will support literacy in Canberra through targeted Libraries ACT programs.

“These include programs for all ages and include resources for parents to help children to read, digital training to help people keep connected with today’s technology as well as the regular free activities that Libraries ACT offer throughout the year at all of its branches,” Ms Little said.

“Items for sale are in good condition with something for all ages. Prices will vary with a variety of magazines for sale for 20 cents, picture books and junior fiction at $1.00, fiction and large print $2.00 and $3.00 for non- fiction books. There will also be special collection items including book sets and selected local history books for sale,” Ms Little said.

The Libraries ACT book sale will commence Saturday 26 November 2016, from 10 am till 2 pm, at the Tuggeranong library on Cowlishaw Street. For more information on library programs and events, visit www.library.act.gov.au
