Wintervention gets its skates on this weekend

Released 29/06/2018

Back by popular demand, the ice skating rink and ice slide return to Garema Place from 4pm today (Friday 29 June) as the Wintervention festival gets into full swing.

City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the skating rink and slide will headline the Wintervention festival until 22 July.

“Wintervention is designed to get people out and about in the city renewal precinct during our colder months and ice skating has proven in recent years to be a great attraction for families at this time of year,” Mr Snow said.

“Open-air ice skating is a great experience and something that can be enjoyed by children, parents, couples and people of all skill levels, from beginners to experienced skaters.

“Come out to the city centre, enjoy the skating and the ice slide, and explore its many great attractions and retail offerings.”

Ten-minute ice skating performances by some of Canberra’s best figure skaters will also be held regularly on Fridays (6.45pm), Saturdays (12.45pm and 6.45pm) and Sundays (12.45pm).

Be entertained by some of the ACT Ice Skating Association’s top figure skaters tonight at 6.45pm and again next Friday (6 July).

All other shows will feature up-and-coming amateur skaters performing solo and pairs routines.

More activities and entertainment options will be added from Friday 6 July to complement the skating and sliding.

“The skating rink and slide are really just the tip of the iceberg,” Mr Snow said.

From Friday 6 July to Sunday 8 July a large-scale candle installation will light up City Walk. Members of the public can walk through and immerse themselves in this amazing light landscape curated by artist Kristian Baggerson.

“From next week we will also have pop-up food and beverage options, entertainment in the La Petit Grande theatre tent, a ferris wheel, inflatable rides, live music, and fire-themed entertainment, every weekend until Sunday 22 July.”

Tickets for ice-skating sessions, coupons for rides and bookings for the theatre tent shows are available at www.canberra.skatingat.com.au.
