Community street party to help shape the future of Dickson centre

Released 18/04/2018

A community street party next week in Dickson with food, drinks, live music and children’s activities will double as an opportunity for the community to help inform a new place making plan for the area.

The City Renewal Authority has engaged specialist place makers Spaced Out to work with the Dickson community to prepare a plan for how the group centre should evolve to build community leadership and encourage more activity and greater use.

The plan will include a schedule of events and activities as well as potential physical improvements, with concept plans for two parts of Dickson’s public realm. The two areas selected will be determined through the consultation process.

The first engagement activity in the consultation process is the community street party, which will run from 5pm to 8pm on Friday 27 April at the plaza between Woolley and Chalice streets.

The party will feature live music, children’s activities, tasty cultural treats, a pop-up bar from High Road, and a few surprises from Canberra’s favourite eat street.

City Renewal Authority chief executive Malcolm Snow said the street party was one of the innovative ways that Spaced Out would engage with the community and a great chance for the community to help inform a new place making plan.

“Community input is crucial in helping create a place making plan that will help make Dickson group centre an exciting, well-used space that meets the needs of the local community and attracts people from all over Canberra,” Mr Snow said.

“Spaced Out will be talking to the community at the street party and meeting with other stakeholders over the coming weeks as they help put together a place making strategy for the City Renewal Authority.

“Dickson centre should be an attractive destination for Canberrans and visitors while still being a community hub for locals.

“A place making strategy will guide the public space improvements and activations the City Renewal Authority, in partnership with the community, can implement to help rejuvenate the Dickson group centre.”

Spaced Out director, and place making specialist, David Snyder, said the event had a strong emphasis on local leadership.

“We want to explore all the experiences that make Dickson a distinctive place in Canberra,” Mr Snyder said.

“Come meet your community and don’t be afraid to get involved in some creative questions about the future of Dickson. We’d love to see you there.”
