All fun and games as community asked for play space input

Swings or roundabouts? Sandpits or soft fall? Grass or gravel? The City Renewal Authority wants to know what you like most about playgrounds.

A survey is now open to gather input into future play spaces in the City Renewal Precinct, especially as part of the new high-quality public realm that will be created as part of the redevelopment of West Basin.

The survey results will contribute to a Play Space Audit being prepared by the University of Canberra’s Play, Creativity and Culture Project.

City Renewal Authority chief executive officer Malcolm Snow said the audit would influence the creation of new play spaces within the precinct.

“Places for play are critical in creating cities that nurture a diverse population,” Mr Snow said.

“If we want children and families to live in, or visit, our city centre then we need high-quality play facilities and playful public spaces that make it an attractive option.

“The play audit will help us determine what play spaces people want more of and also what we need in the city centre to complement the playgrounds and spaces already available.

“We want to hear from the people who use playgrounds about what it is they like best as well as what they think is missing from those experiences.”

Detailed design has not yet been undertaken for the urban park that will extend the length of the West Basin shore line as part of the redevelopment of the area but a play area will be a key element.

“As we transform an area that is currently mostly car parking into a world-class public area we will be seeking further community input,” Mr Snow said.

The play audit being undertaken by the University of Canberra also includes data collection of available play facilities and amenities, observation of playground usage and activity types; on-site surveys of usage patterns and attitudes to play facilities.

The public survey is available at yoursay.act.gov.au until 21 March 2018.
