Dine out in Garema Place at the Pic & Mix pop-up picnic area

Released 25/10/2017

Garema Place will be an even more attractive lunch and dinner option for the next few weeks with the installation of 18 temporary picnic tables and umbrellas.

The City Renewal Authority’s Pic & Mix pop-up picnic area will feature large timber tables and colourful umbrellas for use by the community throughout the day and night.

Picnickers will be able to use the tables to mix with friends, socialise with colleagues or simply enjoy the activity of Garema Place.

City Renewal Authority acting chief executive Nicholas Holt said the Pic & Mix area, which will be moved to different locations in the City Renewal Precinct, offers the community a chance to enjoy some of our city’s great public spaces from a new perspective.

“The tables are not tied to any single business so they are available to use no matter where you have purchased your food,” Mr Holt said.

“Whether you have take-away from one of the local businesses or have brought something from home, the Pic & Mix is a great opportunity to use the space to enjoy this important part of our city.

“The area will be an alcohol-free zone most of the time, except during special events run by some of the nearby businesses, when they will take out a liquor permit over the area and have a mobile bar on site.”

Several local businesses have already agreed to hold special events during the pop-up picnic area’s short stay in Garema Place and the option is still available for other local businesses to get involved.

“The City Renewal Authority is really looking forward to seeing how this public activation experiment works in further activating Garema Place,” Mr Holt said.

“The way in which businesses and the community engage with this initial Pic & Mix will help determine how and where the pop-up urban picnic will be used around the precinct in the future.”

The Pic & Mix picnic area will be in Garema Place from today until 20 November.

The City Renewal Authority is working with Garema Place businesses but is always keen to hear new ideas for activating this fun new community space via our email at cityrenewal@act.gov.au, online or through social media.
