City Renewal Authority to focus on Canberrans

Released 07/07/2017

The City Renewal Authority board met today for the first time and members are already building the foundations for the newly created organisation’s renewal of the City and Northbourne Avenue corridor.

Board chair Michael Easson AM said the board was ready to lead the authority in its task of delivering a vibrant city centre, with high-quality urban renewal delivering places where people want to be.

“We have an important task ahead of us but I am confident that the diverse skills and experiences the board members bring with them will help the authority deliver against the ambitious goals that have been set for it,” Dr Easson said.

“The City Renewal Authority will utilise leading-edge community engagement to help deliver high-quality urban renewal in the City and Northbourne Avenue precinct.

“In order to do this we need to know and take the time to find out what people want from the precinct, not just today but also into the future. We need to know how the community, businesses, developers, investors and government can work together to deliver buildings, infrastructure, transport options, green areas and public spaces to achieve greater interaction between people, and foster more social and economic activity.

“Canberra is a wonderful city and the precinct is already undergoing significant transformation and growth, with a large amount of development already happening in the city centre, along Northbourne Avenue and in Dickson.  We need to take advantage of this opportunity to make sure this development results in a precinct that is sustainable, attractive, vibrant, connected and accessible to even more people than it is today.”

Dr Easson, deputy chair Christine Covington and members Kate Brennan, Nigel Chamier AM, Ken Maher and Gabrielle Trainor met today. A nominee from the National Capital Authority will be appointed in the near future to fill the final board position.

Current City Renewal programs include developing a Haig Park masterplan, progressing City to the Lake with stage two of the West Basin boardwalk, city activation and the continuation of the Asset Recycling Initiative.
