WorkSafe shuts down construction site during ACT/NSW cross border construction inspections

Released 11/10/2017

WorkSafe ACT has issued a prohibition notice on a residential construction site in Coombs as part of the fourth ACT/NSW cross border construction inspection, ACT Work Safe Commissioner, Greg Jones announced today.

“The prohibition notice issued yesterday was effective immediately and closed down the entire multi-level residential apartment development in Coombs,” said Mr Jones.

“When WorkSafe ACT inspectors see significant safety concerns at a workplace or worksite it acts quickly and decisively. Major safety issues detected at this site included non compliant scaffolding, numerous risk of falls from heights, and electrical safety. The site will remain closed until the issues are rectified.

“These serious breaches are under investigation by WorkSafe ACT where it will be determined if further regulatory action will be taken,” Mr Jones said.

“As ACT Work Safety Commissioner I find it particularly disturbing that some construction sites continue to disregard basic safety procedures that are designed to keep workers safe.

“October is National Safe Work Month and I would encourage all employers and workers to refresh their knowledge about work safety on construction sites – they are on notice.”

WorkSafe ACT and Safework NSW inspectors work collaboratively during the year including targeted joint operations.

“The current cross border construction inspections are focussed on scaffolding and falls from heights as well as electrical safety, site security, housekeeping and signage,” Mr Jones said.

“Inspections will continue this week in Belconnen, North Canberra and Molonglo Valley and over the border in Googong, Queanbeyan, Murrumbateman and Yass. Residential construction sites, medium commercial and single residential sites have been chosen for this round of proactive inspections.”

ACT/NSW Cross Border Construction inspections are part of a four year project (2016-2019) to increase safety in high risk areas in the construction industry.  The last cross border inspection for this year will be undertaken in December.
