Gambling and Racing Commission takes disciplinary action against local Club

Released 24/11/2017

Disciplinary action has been taken against the Licensee of a Canberra club by the Gambling and Racing Commission following a breach of the Gambling and Racing Code of Practice.

The Gambling and Racing Commission has taken disciplinary action against the Canberra Raiders Sports Club Ltd, the licensee of the Raiders Belconnen club, after finding that it did not record signs that a patron had a gambling problem as required by the Gambling and Racing Control (Code of Practice) Regulation 2002.

The Canberra Raiders Sports Club Ltd has a right to appeal the Commission’s decision to the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal or the Supreme Court.

Accordingly the Commission will make no further statements regarding the disciplinary action at this time.

The community should be assured that the Gambling and Racing Commission is educating Canberra clubs and gaming venues on their licence obligations relating to managing problem gamblers.

“We are committed to reducing and preventing the risks and harms associated with gambling. Allegations that a licensee has not complied with its obligations will be investigated and the Commission will take action where appropriate,” David Snowden, CEO of the Gambling and Racing Commission said.

“We know problem gambling can have significant impacts not only on the individual, but their friends, family, colleagues and broader community. Clubs play an important role in detecting problem gambling and providing the appropriate information, support or restrictions.”

Venues have been reminded to ensure staff are trained to identify signs of a gambling problem and to appropriately deal with problem gambling. Recognising and recording signs of a person having a gambling problem is an obligation for any venue with a license for gaming machines.
