Statement from WorkSafe Commissioner Greg Jones

Released 02/11/2016

WorkSafe ACT are on site in Barrier Street Fyshwick where a warehouse roof that was being cleaned with a high pressure hose dislodged bonded asbestos material from the roof.

The material has been tested by a licensed hygienist who is qualified to test for asbestos and has confirmed the presence of asbestos material.

An exclusion zone is currently in place to ensure public safety, with a road closure in place at Isa Street and part of Barrier Street (500 metres either side of the intersection).

All members of the public, including people with businesses in the zone should observe the exclusion zone.

Clean up work is currently underway and will be undertaken throughout the night. Remediation will be undertaken thoroughly and as quickly as possible while keeping public safety as the main priority.

WorkSafe ACT will provide regular updates as progress is made on the remediation work.
