Access Canberra advises that Lake Ginninderra has now been re-opened and the lake can be used for unrestricted recreational use after new water sampling showed a reduction in algae levels.
Lake Ginninderra was closed to primary contact recreation (swimming) on 1 November 2016 after high levels of blue-green algae were detected in multiple areas of the lake.
Water testing conducted by ACT Health confirmed that blue-green algae levels reduced from extreme levels to medium levels and the lake is now suitable for unrestricted use. However, anyone who enters the lake is urged to remain on the lookout for blue-green algae for their own health and safety.
‘Lake Closed’ signs will be removed and regular monitoring of the lake will continue.
Access Canberra will continue to consult with ACT Health to assess the condition of Lake Ginninderra.
If people using the lake come across blue-green algae they should get out immediately and report it to Access Canberra on 13 22 81. If a suspected algal bloom is present, people should not drink, swim or allow their pets near the water.
