The Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations Division within Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate is responsible for whole-of-government policy and guidance on workplace health and safety matters, as well as the delivery of return to work case management services. The Division also delivers safety support services across the Service to assist directorates and agencies to establish and maintain safe workplaces.

The ACT Public Sector Workplace Health and Safety Policy Statement, POL 2012/01' articulates the ongoing commitment to the health, safety and well-being of al ACT Government workers. The policy statement can be located via the following link:

Injury Management

ACT Public Service workers are covered for workers' compensation under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (Commonwealth) which is administered by Comcare.

Policy - WHS 07/11 Managing Injury and Illness in the Workplace

A whole-of-government policy has been developed to outline the principles and arrangements surrounding the care, recovery and support of ACTPS staff with work related and non-work related injuries and/or illnesses.

Services  to assist workers to stay at or return to work following an injury/illness are  provided through the Injury Management Team within Chief Minister, Treasury and  Economic Development Directorate, in conjunction with directorate Human  Resources staff and supervisors. If you are a worker, supervisor or HR staff  member wishing to seek assistance or information about staying at or returning  to work after an injury, you can contact the Team on 6205 4519 or at InjuryManagement@act.gov.au.

Legislation

All workers in the ACT are covered under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 which commenced from 1 January 2012. Accident/Incident Reporting

The Work Injury Reporting system makes it easy to report workplace incidents which have or could cause personal harm.

All work-related accidents/incidents and 'near misses' must be reported within 48 hours.

'Accidents' and 'incidents' to be reported are any workplace event that:

  • endangers the health or safety of a person
  • results in injury or disease, however minor.


Such events include, but are not limited to situations that:

  • affect, or have the potential to affect the psychological health of a person
  • result in acute physical injury or a physical injury that has developed over time
  • involve a narrow escape (or 'near miss') which could cause future harm in a similar incident.

ACT Public Service Workplace Health and Safety Policies

ACT Public Service workplace safety policies are approved by the Commissioner for Public Administration and provide information and practical guidance to assist public service agencies and instrumentalities in meeting their workplace safety responsibilities. ACT Public Service WHS Policies

ACT Work Safety Council

The Work Safety Council is established under Part 2.1 of Schedule 2 of the Work Health  Safety Act 2011. The Council has existed in similar forms under previous legislation in the ACT.

The council consists of:

  • 4 members representing the interests of employees
  • 4 members representing the interests of employees
  • 4 members appointed by the Minister
  • the Work Safety Commissioner.

The Members who are ‘appointed by the Minister’ are generally persons who are not necessarily aligned to either employers or employees but have expertise in work health and safety matters.

A list of Work Safety Council members may be obtained by contacting the Work Safety Policy team within the Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations Division.
