What is Open Data?

Open data is publicly available data that can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone.

What are the licensing arrangements for Open Data, and are there any restrictions on how I can use it?

In accordance with ACT Government’s Proactive Release of Data (Open Data) Policy, data is published under the Creative Commons 4.0 licence. You can copy, redistribute, and use the material for any purpose, providing you give appropriate credit, include a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made.  To find out more about Creative Commons licensing, please refer to Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International.

What sort of data will I find on dataACT?

dataACT contains a wide range of government data across many different categories. We are continually sourcing, updating and publishing data for the public to use.

How do I find data?

You can find data in a number of ways:

  • Use the “Search” box at the top right of the homepage  - Enter keywords to search for specific datasets
  • Use the “Data Catalog” tab on the top left of the homepage or the “Find Data” tab on the menu bar  - These options will take you to the full catalogue where you can search by keywords or category
  • Use the “Category” tiles at the bottom of the home page – Clicking on an individual category tile will show all datasets in that category
  • Use the “Feature Tiles” on the homepage – We use these to highlight datasets that might be of interest to the community

How can I use or interact with the data?

There are many ways to use the data. To download data as a spreadsheet, view the dataset and select “Export”. For the more technical, there are options available from the “Developers” tab on the menu bar. You can also create an account and build personalised charts and filters, which can be shared with colleagues or published in our catalogue. More details on how to use the platform can be found under the “Use Data” tab on the menu bar.

Can I request additional data?

If you have searched our datasets and can't find what you are looking for, you can submit a request for additional datasets via the “suggest data” tab on the menu bar. The ACT Government will assess each request individually and determine if the data is available and appropriate to publish.

Can I contribute or add data?

Using the dataACT platform, you can work with existing data to create and share your own views. If you have additional data that you feel is of interest to the community and suitable for publishing, please contact the Office of the Chief Digital Officer by email at cdo@act.gov.au.

Who maintains dataACT?

dataACT is managed by the ACT Government’s Office of the Chief Digital Officer. If you have feedback or notice any errors on the site, please email the Office of the Chief Digital Officer at cdo@act.gov.au.

Is there any risk that personal information will be published?

All data goes through a rigorous assessment process to determine its suitability for publication. The ACT Government adheres to all information privacy legislation. Can I publish a comment on a dataset?

After selecting a dataset, you can comment using the "Discuss" tab.  We monitor all comments and reserve the right to remove comments that step outside the boundaries of being civil and courteous.
