Wellington, New Zealand

On 6 July 2016, the ACT Government signed an agreement with Wellington City Council formally establishing a sister city relationship between Canberra and Wellington.

The catalyst for the new sister city relationship between the Australian and New Zealand capitals is the commencement of the ‘Capital Express’, direct international flights with Singapore Airlines. The service will operate between Singapore, Canberra and Wellington, four times per week, starting on 20 September 2016.

The Sister City agreement opens the way for the City of Wellington and Canberra to collaborate in many areas and to promote our beautiful cities. Through working together we will continue to grow our respective economies, support our respective business communities and continue to enhance the cultural and social fabric of Wellington and Canberra.

The commitment includes programs that seek to facilitate business partnerships, tourism promotion, education and cultural exchange, research and knowledge sharing.

A number of Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) have already been signed between Canberra and Wellington organisations with mutual interests. These include:

Upcoming events

  • November – Canberra Week in Wellington
  • 12 November A-League – Central Coast Mariners vs Wellington Phoenix at GIO Stadium
